About this Project
Discover the transformation of Pine Mountain Road as it undergoes a remarkable expansion and enhancement. Baldwin Paving is proud to present the “Gravix Wall – Pine Mtn Road” project, a symphony of engineering ingenuity, innovation, and efficiency.
Widening and Enhancing the Corridor
Spanning 1.5 miles, Pine Mountain Road is undergoing a substantial transformation. Three 12-ft. lanes are being added, flanked by the addition of sidewalks on both sides of the road. In a bid to minimize the right-of-way impacts, retaining walls have been thoughtfully integrated into the project.
Engineering Excellence with Gravix
American Engineers Inc. (AEI), the project’s civil engineer, recognized the need for an innovative solution to address the 25 feet of grade change while staying within a limited 17-foot right-of-way. In response, the Gravix precast retaining wall system was selected. Its ability to minimize excavation and right-of-way impact made it the ideal choice for this project.
Baldwin Paving: Where Innovation Meets Expertise
Baldwin Paving, the prime contractor for this project, took on the role of the wall installer. Leveraging the unique properties of Gravix, we utilized asphalt millings from other projects as backfill, maximizing the wall’s stability and sustainability. The Gravix engineering team performed thorough material analysis, ensuring a seamless integration of these materials.
Safety and Operational Improvements
The Department of Transportation is orchestrating a comprehensive overhaul of Pine Mountain Road, prioritizing safety and operational enhancements across the entire corridor. The project’s scope extends to road widening, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, and the strategic implementation of retaining walls to minimize land-use impact.
